How does tox work?

Updated: Nov 11

Botox, also known as botulinum toxin, is a purified protein that when used appropriately has therapeutic and cosmetic applications. Botox primarily works by temporarily paralyzing or relaxing muscles.

When used for cosmetic purposes, Botox is injected into specific facial muscles to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.

Botox targets the nerve endings that control muscle contractions (Science Lingo: It blocks the release of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter responsible for transmitting signals from nerves to muscles). As a result, the affected muscle experiences temporary paralysis or relaxation, which smooths out the overlying skin and reduces the appearance of wrinkles. Fabulous!

After the injection, it takes a few days for Botox to take effect. The results typically last for several months, but the exact duration can vary depending on individual factors such as metabolism and the specific area being treated. As the effects wear off, muscle activity gradually returns, and the treatment can be repeated if desired. Botox stays in the area of treatment, so your provider is able to target specific muscles and cosmetic impact.

Common areas for Botox injections include forehead, crow's feet, "11's", neck, nose, chin, upper lip, masseters, jawline and underarms for excessive sweating.

There are several FDA approved wrinkle relaxers like Botox approved for cosmetic use in the United States. A few include Botox Cosmetic, Dysport, Xeomin, Jeaveau, and Daxxify. While these products vary by producer, the underlying result and process for injection is similar. It's important to note that wrinkle relaxer of any kind should only be administered by a qualified healthcare professional with expertise in its usage. While generally safe, there can be potential side effects and risks associated with Botox injections, which should be discussed with a medical professional beforehand.

The practitioners at Skin CoLAB are seen as leaders in the aesthetic medicine community for their appropriate, effective use of toxin and injectable treatments.
